  1. Hi, I'm Zena. I am in my last semester of the MCC 2 year program (WOOHOO). I got my credentials in multi-subject teaching, and will get my single subject credentials in science (when I get around to finally taking the science CSET). I'm a mom to a 10 year old who inherited my sarcasm and love of reading. I teach a combo class at a charter school of transitional K/Kindergarten/1st grade, and it has been one crazy ride, but I love what I do and my students are phenomenal. That's pretty much it :)

  2. It's Keith! I'm finishing the MCC 2yr program as a Single Subject Math teacher. Along the way I'll also get Single Subject Science (Physics) credential. Teaching is a second career for me. The first was as an engineer (EE/CS), so math and physics are obvious choices to teach. I'm looking to teach math and/or physics in HS, or MS math (but probably the HS thing!)

Why the change? I have three children (boys), and in being part of their lives growing up I became that "other adult" in the lives of other-people's children. I also spent much time with groups of boys 10-18 years old as a scout leader, and got hooked on helping young people (yep, even during those awkward and treacherous teenage years). With my love of math/science/engineering, and the call for STEM teachers, teaching seemed like a great place to invest my efforts.

That's the real reason. What I usually tell people when they ask is either
    1) I couldn't be evil enough as an engineering, so I decided to become a High School math teacher (bwahahahaha).
    2) I don't like money.

A few other things: I consider my home town Tulsa, OK, but I'm a long-time Mira Mesa resident. Student taught at Innovation MS and San Diego HS. Play tennis when I can. I love the outdoors, and on my bucket-list is hiking the PCT...like the movie "Wild", but without the messy, motivating life-drama!

  3. Hi! I'm Danielle. I am in my first year studying for my M.Ed. in TESOL, Literacy and Culture. I moved here from Holloman AFB, NM where I was living with my husband for eight months. I love living in California and can't believe I didn't move out here sooner! I have worked previously with adults with developmental disabilities with Americorps and a NPO in Pittsburgh, PA.

I love traveling and immersing myself into other cultures. I studied abroad in Dresden, Germany where I attained my TEFL Certificate in 2012. I lived in both Italy and Russia, and was inspired to continue my education in ESL while teaching English in Russia. I enjoy working for non profits and hope to one day merge my interests of teaching English and doing charitable work into a career. For many years I had been set on joining the PeaceCorps, but love got in the way. I am hoping that one day my husband and I both can continue that dream.

I have an almost one year old pug named Benjamin Button and he is my world. I have a deep passion for animal rights and although I am allergic to most furry creatures, I love to be surrounded by them (even non-furry ones).

  4. My name is Carolina , and I was born and raised in Brazil from a German mother and a Polish father. I have three lovely daughters who help me improve as a human being everyday in more ways than one. I am originally a journalist who started teaching English as a means to pay for my College education. I eventually fell in love with the profession. When I graduated in journalism I went back to college, this time to get my degree in Pedagogy. I also hold a specialization in Psychology of Education. I have experience teaching children (from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade), but very little experience teaching adults. I am very happy to be here in San Diego (love the weather) and USD has being my second home since I moved. I love the nature and ‘use’ it to recharge my batteries and find equilibrium when I lack it.

  5. Hi Class! My name is Tai, I am currently in my second semester in the MEd TESOL program. I am originally from San Diego but I have lived all over the country due to both of my parents being in the Navy. So, it feels great to be back in my first hometown! I started teaching in a Kindergarten classroom and since then I have taught English to middle school students and adults. I love being outside, traveling, dogs, learning Spanish, and discovering new foods!

  6. Hi! I'm Tina, and I'm in the M.Ed. in TESOL, Literacy, and Culture program. I taught ESL in China for one year and have spent a few months teaching here in the U.S. Like most teachers, I love being around and learning from people. I know that in TESOL I will constantly be learning about my students, their cultures, and their lives, and that's one reason I was drawn to this career path. When I'm not working or studying, I am probably running, biking, or hiking and making an unnecessary number of comments on how nice the weather is here in San Diego (I'm from Vermont). Looking forward to the semester and getting to know everyone better!

  7. Hi, this is Erika Soga. I am a second year TESOL student. I was born in Japan, but grew up in America, and Japan. My Mom says that my first language is English. It is interesting, because I spoke English since I was a baby, but I remember really picking it up when I was five when I went to America for a few months. I attended a montesari school in San Diego, and picked it up. Language has always been an important part in my life. I always felt special that I could speak two language. There are some scary stuff about being bilingual though. Like language loss, and being behind than your peers. I think these struggles leads me to want to teach ESL. The advantage I have is that I know the struggle that ESL students go through. Although I may not understand all, I feel like I understand most.

My hobbies are Japanese Tea Ceremony, golf, and tennis. I have taken seven years of Japanese Tea Ceremony in Japan, and just started taking it here too. I love the philosophy like wabi sabi. You use a lot of Japanese words in your book, and I agree that some Japanese words are best if you use it instead of trying to translate it. Golf and tennis are social sports for me. I have taken tennis since I was little, and I have always enjoyed it.

I hope to learn a lot, and have a good time in your class!

  8. Hi my name is Ivanna. I am from New York City. I am a first year in the MEd Tesol program. I have my B. S. in Education, adolescent education with a concentration in Math. Ideally I would like to teach Math literacy. I feel that is something that is needed in our students today. My current program is for adults, but I do plan to go back to teach at a high school level eventually. I feel that I have a passion for teaching and for young adults. I love San Diego thus far and do not plan on going back to New York. I love to travel so lets see where this program takes me! I am excited for this class and this semester!

  9. Hi everyone! My name is R. Nicole, I am currently a first year in the M.Ed. in TESOL, Literacy and Culture program. While studying Sociology at the University of California Riverside I started tutoring Math and English which cultivated my passion for teaching. Since I also love to travel and learn about other people, their cultures, and their language, I chose to pursue a career in TESOL. It’s for this reason that I volunteered to teach ESL through my local library as a way to gain some experience. Outside of work and school, I enjoy writing short stories and plays (where one was performed at the Old Globe), baseball, and spending hours on end reading.

  10. Hi, I am Olive. I am in the first year of TESOL program. I come from Shanghai, China. San Diego is the first place I arrived in the US. Both living and studying experience here are a big shift from my home city. I missed Chinese food but I enjoyed the free life style here. I taught adults English for half a year before and felt myself lack of professional knowledge of learning and teaching. That's why I choose TESOL program. And I am particularly interested in this course about cognition and learning. Hope to gain more confidence of teaching after the course!
